E-mail: [email protected] Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an auto-immune disease with multiple systems dysfunctions. Neurological complications are frequently related to the disease. However, Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and its subtypes are seldom associated to SLE. We report a rare case of association between active SLE and overlap of Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis (BBE) and GBS, with a severe course.

Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis and Fisher syndrome: anti-GQ1b antibody syndrome.
In the 1950s, Bickerstaff and Fisher independently described cases with a unique presentation of ophthalmoplegia and ataxia. The neurological features were typically preceded by an antecedent infection and the majority of patients made a spontaneous recovery. In the cases with Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis, there was associated altered consciousness and in some, hyperreflexia, in support o...

BACKGROUND Pharyngeal-cervical-brachial weakness (PCB) is considered a variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Because of its rarity, there have been no studies of large numbers of patients with PCB. OBJECTIVE To clarify the nosological classification of PCB. DESIGN Retrospective study. SETTING Academic research. Patients Medical records were reviewed of patients who manifested progress...

BMJ Case Rep Published online: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/bcr-2015211514 DESCRIPTION Hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) is a radiological finding often associated with intestinal ischaemia and high mortality. We report a 34-year-old male patient who developed flaccid paralysis of all four limbs, areflexia and ophthalmoplegia after a...
متن کاملPapulonodular mucinosis, Guillain-Barré syndrome and nephrotic syndrome in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus: a case report
BACKGROUND Awareness of the spectrum of clinical manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), especially uncommon changes, is essential for diagnosis and effective management of patients. CASE PRESENTATION A 26-year-old Chinese man with SLE initially manifested cutaneous papulonodular mucinosis and developed acute Guillain-Barré syndrome and class V lupus nephritis 2 years later. His...

Bickerstaff reported eight patients who, in addition to acute ophthalmoplegia and ataxia, showed drowsiness, extensor plantar responses or hemisensory loss. This condition has been named Bickerstaff's brainstem encephalitis (BBE). One patient had gross flaccid weakness in the four limbs. Presumably because of the rarity of this disorder, there has been no reported study on a large number of pat...
